BULLION ROBBERY MURDER CHARGE

Special report by Duncan Swift

Police last night charged a man with the murder of slain police officer Stephen Morris, who died of a blood clot caused by being shot in the leg during a bullion raid.

The death of PC Morris, who had been praised by the Prime Minister for being a hero in tackling gangsters who are hell-bent on bringing lawlessness to London, is a hammer blow to decent society. PC Morris survived the shooting, but tragically succumbed to a blood clot after surgery to remove the bullet several weeks ago.

Now Derek Brown, 18, a petty criminal from South London, has been charged with murder and will face court proceedings at the Old Bailey in due course. He had previously been arrested after attempting to flee the scene of the robbery and charged with attempted murder of the policeman. Witnesses, including the driver of the bullion van, which was delivering gold to the offices of KLM Airlines, say they saw him point the gun at PC Morris and pull the trigger. Prosecutors are expected to call for the full force of the law to be applied—meaning Brown will face the death penalty if convicted.

Detective Chief Inspector Walter Munro, head of the Flying Squad, speaking exclusively to the London Evening News, said: “We are devastated by the death of one of our fine colleagues, but are heartened by the thought that we have a man in custody already for the shooting. We hope that justice will do its job.

“In the meantime, we continue to step up our efforts to find the others responsible for this shocking and appalling robbery, in order to stamp out the gangsters in our city. We will leave no stone unturned.”

Residents of Queen’s Buildings, the London tenement where Brown grew up, were last night in shock over the death of the policeman and the consequences for a young man whom many knew well.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “If he pulled the trigger, he as good as killed him, even if the policeman survived the shooting. He should swing for it.”

Another added: “It’s a dreadful tragedy, but I can’t help thinking the boy could have been helped to stay on the straight and narrow more and avoided all this trouble. I blame his mother and his sister.”
